Food for Thought: Training using SMART50

What is SMART x 50?

SMART x 50, developed by Kathy Sdao, stands for ‘See, Mark And Reward Training.’ This simple, introductory technique is designed to help improve your dog’s behaviour by capturing and reinforcing desirable, naturally occurring behaviours. Instead of focusing on mistakes, SMART x 50 encourages you to look out for and reward the good. One of the key benefits of this approach is that it utilises your dog's daily food allowance. Simply measure out their daily portion and place it in a jar, or Tupperware container in a central location of your home. Throughout the day, use this food to capture and reinforce desirable behaviours, engage in training sessions, and provide enrichment. This ensures they are mentally and physically stimulated while being fed, enhancing their overall mental health and developing a better-behaved canine companion for you to enjoy!

How does it work?

It’s simple, really! You’ll actively look for good behaviours, mark them when you see them, and reward your dog with their food.

  1. Prepare your reinforcers
Grab your food and place them in the container of your choice. Keep them out of your dog's reach. If using treats instead, choose a low-calorie option. Small, tasty treats are most ideal.

  2. Find behaviours to reinforce
Actively, look for moments when your dog does something you want them to do, without asking or prompting. This may look like:
    - Laying calmly next to you while you watch TV
    - Not barking when someone walks past the window
    - Sitting quietly instead of jumping up
    - Going to their crate or bed on their own
Your dog will show lots of other good behaviours —you just have to notice them!

  3. Mark and reinforce
When you catch your dog doing something positive let your dog know by marking the behaviour with your marker word or clicker, then immediately reward your dog with one of food pieces.

  4. Repeat
Consistency is key—make it a part of your daily routine!
